Nagios is the industry standard in enterprise-grade IT infrastructure monitoring. The popularity of Nagios as an IT infrastructure monitoring tool is based on two key traits: tremendous flexibility and virtually unlimited extensibility. There are millions of Nagios installations around the globe monitoring billions of things, including servers, networking equipment, applications, databases, websites, etc.

Network Automation with Ansible + Nagios

Nagios + Ansible integration distributes a Nagios monitoring agent to Linux inventory, and then registers that Linux inventory for monitoring with Nagios. This enables users to spin up deployments in hours instead of days and has been well received by the Nagios community. We are currently working on extending integration with Ansible for Network Automation and Configuration Management. Also, we are working on playbooks that will auto-configure Linux inventory for syslog forwarding to Nagios Log Server.

The benefit for Ansible users, particularly in Network Automation, will be the ability to leverage Nagios monitoring to ensure proper notifications and reporting that automation actions have fired, completed successfully, and also that back-up files exist where they should be found, are as recent as expected, and pass integrity checks.
